What is a China shopping agent?

Before you order anything, it pays to understand the agent's role — it explains almost everything that follows.

What happens in this step?

A China shopping agent (also called a buying agent or proxy) is a service in China that buys on your behalf. Many shops on Taobao, Weidian or 1688 do not ship abroad and only accept Chinese payment methods — the agent closes exactly that gap: they order for you, receive the goods in their warehouse and later ship everything to you in one parcel.

The real value sits in between: at the warehouse your items are weighed, measured and photographed. You see what actually arrived before it starts the expensive international leg — and you can bundle orders from several shops into a single parcel.

That is why you normally pay twice: first the product price (plus any service fee), and later — once everything is in the warehouse — the international shipping based on actual weight and dimensions. The two amounts are never fixed at the same time, which is exactly why comparing shipping before picking an agent matters.

How to do it

  1. Understand the full journey once

Find the product → submit the link to the agent → agent buys it → goods arrive at their warehouse → check QC photos → choose a shipping line and pay the second payment → track it to your door. This guide walks you through every stage.

  2. See which agents exist

The how2ship agent directory lists every agent from the comparison, with a short profile, current shipping lines and coupons. No need to commit yet — the next step compares prices for your actual shipment.

  3. Sketch what you want to order

Shipping a single T-shirt internationally rarely makes sense — the shipping can cost more than the item. Most people order a “haul”: several items the agent bundles into one parcel.

What to pay attention to

  • An agent is not a shop: they only buy what you link and are not responsible for the seller's quality — that is what the QC photos in step 5 are for.
  • Service fees, storage rules and payment methods differ per agent — check the conditions directly with the agent before signing up.
  • The shipping price is set at the warehouse, from the packed parcel's weight and dimensions. Everything before that is an estimate.

Typical beginner mistakes

  • Confusing the agent with the seller — and blaming the wrong one for product flaws.
  • Ordering a single item and being surprised by the shipping share.
  • Taking the first agent from a video without comparing prices for your own destination.

Quick checklist

  • I understand the two payments: product price now, shipping later.
  • I know the goods go to the agent's warehouse first, not to me.
  • I have a rough plan of what goes into my haul.
  • I have skimmed the agent directory.
